MIGRAIN: Introduction to feminism

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

Laura Bates started the Everyday Sexism project as she got sexually assaulted three times in a week and stayed quiet. Many people told her to stop making a fuss, women are equal now and you can't take a joke. Then when she realized that it was time to make a fuss, she created the everyday sexism project to voice her experiences as well as it being a safe place where everyone no matter what your age, race, gender or religion is, you could also express your personal experiences of sexual assault

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?

Yes, it is required in western societies as using Laura's experience, many people do not talk about this issue

often. It also talks about the positive experiences that other people have from Sexism, meaning the actions they have taken/take to prevent anyone else becoming a victim of racism.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?
As technology becomes much more prominent in today's day and age, it is much more accessible and convenient to communicate via the internet where everyone can connect.
4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?

I believe that feminism will not be needed in the future as people will start to accept it as a norm. More and more of the public will accept people for who they are and also be able to talk more openly about such issues.

Feminists like Laura Bates will be seen as a role model to many feminists or non- feminists in the future as she pushed for change sooner that people expected (when feminism was not the norm). Through the Everyday Sexism project, people will begin to become much more aware and educated with such topics and so with this knowledge, society will be able to look for solutions to prevent sexual harassment in the future.

Media Magazine MM55:

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?

What is networked feminism?- Feminism split up in 4 waves to explain its cultural context

Fourth wave- 20th century NETWORKED FEMINISM. This feminism aims to tackle social equality issues found on modern technology. This is a movement that began around 2010 where feminists used the power of social media to express societal concerns about modern day feminism.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave ‘networked feminism’?

  • First wave- 19th-20th century that focused on suffrage
  • Second wave- 1960s focused on campaigning for the growth of equal rights and leading to the EQUAL PAY ACT 1970
  • Third wave- 1990s (post-feminism)
  • Fourth wave- 20th century digitalised version of third wave.

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a 100-word summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

Everyday Sexism:
The project was started by Laura Bates back in 2012 as a website which posted examples of sexism that users faced every day. Laura set it up after finding feminism hard to talk about, saying: ‘Again and again, people told me sexism is no longer a problem – that women are equal now’. The response she received proved differently, with 50,000 entries of sexist experiences made by December 2013. Three years later.

HeForShe: HeForShe is led by multi award winning actress, Emma Watson. Although sexism occurs mainly with females, men can also be exposed to sexism, we just don't see it often. She advocates for change and to unite both sexes instead of separating them. She aims to have a 'non-man hating' type of feminism and thinks it will be successful.

FCKH8 campaign- one of the most successful and popular digital campaigns for feminism. They use their YouTube channel to use women to share their experiences as well as promote a fair society.

This Girl Can was founded due to the fact that some women were insecure about opening about their physiques. This fitness campaign helps women express many photos of themselves where they will not be judged.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

I agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism as it correlates with how people live today. Today, social media can be seen as the best place to voice our opinions as it reaches a much wider audience globally. Projects like the Everyday Sexism project are not an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s because technology has developed tremendously that it sort of controls us. It controls our beliefs and values to the point where our own personal information and data can be accessed without us even knowing. Furthermore, due to these changes, the Everyday Sexism project competes with a whole new era of technology (20th century) and competes with the ever changing developments of technology.
