MIGRAIN: Ideology
BBC Question Time analysis:
1) What examples of binary opposition can you suggest from watching this clip?
One example of a binary opposition that I have identified is the conflict between Right wing and Left wing political parties. Put simply, both Nigel (Brexit party) and Russell (Labour party) compete from complete opposite ends of the political scale where Nigel believes that immigrants are responsible for the staggering population rise in England and the economic issues facing the country whereas, Brand argues that it is not due to the immigrants rather, people like Nigel (who are in authority positions) who are using people's resources, taking away jobs, taking away housing and not paying taxes. Another binary opposition identified is the clash between the Middle class and Working class. Brand talks about how big corporations (capitalism) are exploiting blue-collar workers and disabled individuals.

2) What ideologies are on display in this clip?
This idea about capitalist vs. socialist views can be seen as an ideology in the clip. This is because both Farage and Brand debate about the two perspectives. Brand favours the socialist view and believes that less affluent individuals are being exploited by people in power as well as the fact that immigrants are not to be blamed for the economic crash of the country however Farage favours the capitalist view.

1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence.
Using the Marxist theory, we can see that the ruling class keep the poor under civic means in the Hunger games.
2) What view of capitalist ideology is presented in the Hunger Games films?
Those in power control ideas, as well as resources. The world is caught under the dictatorship of President Snow, a man who beleives more in his own supreme leadership than the people of his country

MM52 Page 48: They Live - Understanding Ideology
1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence.
The ideas that make up the dominant ideology in Britain do not remain static- they change as new ideas develop and hegemony relates to this concept of ideology.
2) What are the four accepted ideological beliefs in western societies highlighted by the article?
Money= Happiness
Consumer goods= Fulfilment
Marriage/ Family/ Children= Happiness
Obedience/ Work= Fulfilment
3) What does Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggest about power and ideology in society?
He argued that the power of ideology derives primarily from ideas and structures which support, and thus serve the purpose of, and elite social group which is able to dominate through ideas, rather than militaristic strength or fear.
4) What does French theorist Louis Althusser suggest about ideology and consumerism?
His view was that ideology is the greatest material power and dominates our day to day lives through two key forms of control:
Ideological state apparatus- These institutions such as the Church, the education system, the family and the media control peoples ideas and dominate implicitly through 'common sense' acceptance and social norms, rather than through fear
Repressive state apparatus- These institutions such as the Government, Army, Police, Courts etc. which are dominated by the elite, regulate social behaviour and repress the masses through physical coercion and punitive law.
5) Do YOU agree with the idea behind They Live - that we are unthinkingly controlled by the media which is run in the interests of the economic elite? These are the big questions of A Level Media!
I agree with the idea behind 'They Live'- that we are unthinkingly controlled by the media which is run in the interests of the economic elite. This is because we are continuously exploited by the elite in order to maintain the rule of capitalism- that is an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production by a certain minority group named the Bourgeoise.
