MIGRAIN:Narrative

Narrative

Media Factsheet 14:

1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

The given example of a show using Todorov's narrative structure is Wallace and Gromit

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.

The clip that i used was season 1 episode 1 from stranger things. There is a group of boys who are playing a board game called Dungeons and Dragons. They are playing and having a great time as any child would but this is disrupted as the mother says it's time to finish the game and the friends must go home now. Mike, tries to convince his mum to let them play a little longer but she says no. As the friends leave the music increases and the fact that we don't know a lot builds tension. Will confesses that in the game,'The Demogorgan, he got me'. This is quite ironic as it foreshadows the future as the monster does end up getting the little boy. The flicker of the light also builds suspense and creates a dark and eerie atmosphere.

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.

    • Batman
    • Superman
    • Wonder Woman

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.

A hero and a villain

5) What example is provided in the Fact sheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?

The winner often represents the dominant ideas and values of our culture. When the policeman captures the criminal in a crime drama- the ideology of the value of law and order is emphasised.

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?

Enigma and Action codes offer gratifications for audiences as they can distract from real life or add excitement to a characters life.

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
  • Episodic narrative (the series) Fictions which have many parts but where the narrative arc is usually resolved at the end of each episode.
  • Overarching narrative (the serial) Individual episodes do not tend to have a resolution; this comes at the end of the serial.
  • Mixed narrative Episodes that can be watched on their own as they usually deal with a number of small conflicts which resolve at the end of the episode.
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative) These have a continuous narrative and they tell a number of different stories at the same time.

8) How does the Fact sheet suggest adverts use narrative?

Often adverts set up a problem (bad breath) and then immediately offer the solution (buy their toothpaste) to create a swift resolution (fresh breath)
